What You Need to Know About Breast Augmentation
Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Op.Dr. Deniz Küçükkaya explains what you need to know about breast augmentation.
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to enhance the size, shape, and fullness of a woman’s breasts. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide and is among the plastic surgeries that yield the most successful results.
Breast augmentation is performed to:
- Enlarge naturally small breasts.
- Restore the shape and size of breasts lost due to pregnancy, weight loss, or breastfeeding.
- Correct asymmetry between the breasts.
- Treat cases where the breast has been removed due to breast cancer or deformed due to burns or other traumatic causes.
How is breast size determined?
- The patient’s height, weight, and overall body structure are considered. Of course, the width of the shoulders and hips should be particularly taken into account.
- The shape of the patient’s chest is considered. Some people may have a narrow chest even if they are tall, while shorter patients may have a broad chest. All these factors greatly influence the size and shape of the implant to be chosen.
- The current size of the patient’s breasts is also considered. Whether the patient has no breast tissue or some amount of breast tissue can determine the size of the implant.
- Attention is given to the symmetry of the breasts in terms of size. Many women have asymmetrical breasts, and this is completely natural. If the asymmetry is not very noticeable from the front, there may be no need to correct it. However, in cases where the asymmetry is very pronounced, a larger implant may need to be placed on the smaller side.
Before the surgery, the size of the breasts is determined together with the patient, and the key is to achieve a natural appearance. The patient’s desires, the examination, and our recommendations are all evaluated to reach a joint decision. We advise patients who request larger sizes than we recommend by saying, “You might regret having an implant that’s too large for your body in the future.”
This is because deformities that can develop over time due to changes in tissue structure become more visible as the size of the implants increases. Therefore, it’s important to think long-term when making a decision. Whether it’s breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, or any other cosmetic procedure, I always recommend the most natural, personalized, and long-term suitable method.
How long does the surgery take?
The surgery is typically completed within an hour, allowing the patient to achieve their desired breasts in a short time. It is a quick and fast-recovery surgery. Having beautiful breasts is every woman’s natural right, and thanks to advancements in medicine, achieving the desired breasts is now much easier.
The recovery time for breast augmentation surgery depends on the type of surgery and the individual patient. Although recovery times vary based on the technique used by the surgeon (whether the breast implants are placed above or below the muscle tissue or the location of the surgical incision), the patient’s actions post-surgery also greatly influence the recovery process.
Patients who wish to recover quickly and return to their daily lives should follow their doctor’s advice. Based on your age, physical characteristics, and health condition, your doctor will inform you about what activities should be avoided in the first few weeks after surgery.
